Step-By-Step Guide to Reinstalling Tape In Weft Extensions

Step-By-Step Guide to Reinstalling Tape In Weft Extensions

That moment when tape in weft extensions start growing out or slipping, you know it’s time for reapplication! No need to stress, weft tape in hair extension reinstallation doesn’t have to be complicated (especially with our step-by-step guide!). All you need are the right tools and a bit of guidance, and you’ll be able to remove and reapply the extensions with ease. Ready to get started? Here’s what you need to know!

How To Reapply Tape In Wefts Like a Pro

When you’re about to take out your tape in weft extensions and reapply them, there are some important steps you need to follow so you don’t damage the extensions or natural hair. There’s a right way to do this and a wrong way (we’ll explain the proper way!) As a pro tip, always take your time with this process and do not rush through it to avoid making any reapplication mistakes. Whether you reinstall them on yourself or for a client, here’s what you need to know!

Add These to Your Reapplication Toolkit:

  • Previously worn weft tape in hair extension set

  • Single-sided tape roll or single-sided tape strips

Step 1: Remove the Tape Wefts

Start by applying the remover to each tape bond, then let it sit for a few seconds so it can break down the adhesive. Then gently peel apart the wefts as they loosen and remove them from the hair. Always work slowly and avoid pulling so you don’t damage the extensions or natural hair in the process.

Step 2: Wash and Prep the Hair

Once each weft tape in hair extension is out, you’ll need to wash the natural hair. Use shampoo to remove any leftover adhesive, oils, or buildup. Skip the conditioner, since too much moisture can make it harder for the new tape to grip. Make sure the hair is completely dry before reinstalling!

Step 3: Clean the Wefts and Add New Tape

Peel off the old adhesive from each tape in weft using your fingers or a little extra remover. Then wash the extensions using a gentle, extension-safe shampoo and lay them flat to air dry fully. Once dry, measure and cut fresh tape from your double-sided tape roll and apply it to the tape in wefts.

Step 4: Section the Hair for Reinstallation

Begin at the nape of the neck and use the sectioning ring to create clean horizontal parts. Clip away the top layers of hair as you go along. Precise sectioning helps the reinstall look just as seamless as the first time, so using a sectioning ring is super helpful!

Step 5: Apply the Single-Sided Tape

Take a thin section of the natural hair and place the weft underneath with the tape side facing up, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the scalp. Then, cut a strip of single-sided tape from your single-sided tape roll or use a single-sided tape strip and apply it facing down, sandwiching the natural hair between the single-sided tape and the tape weft. Press firmly to secure the bond.

Step 6: Work Your Way Up

As you apply the rest of the tape in weft extensions, continue moving up the head in neat, horizontal sections. Be mindful of spacing and leave a little room between rows so your natural hair can move freely. Avoid placing wefts too close to your hairline or part to help keep everything hidden and comfortable.

Step 7: Final Touches and Blend

Once all your tape in wefts are back in, gently tug on each one to ensure they’re secure. Check for any spots that feel bulky or uneven. For a custom look, you can also trim the extensions to blend them in with the natural hair. Now you can style as usual, just avoid applying heat directly to the tape bonds as this can loosen them (not what you want to happen after all your hard work!).
