Your Step-By-Step Guide to Applying Hair Extensions Using Tape Wefts

Ready to start applying your tape weft extensions? First, you’ll need to gather your supplies! If you don’t have everything on hand yet, no worries, we’ve got the essentials listed below. We carry all the items for application (and removal!) so you’ll just need your favorite set of extensions. Follow our expert steps to see how easy tape weft extensions are to apply!

What You’ll Need:

  • Weft tape hair extensions

  • Single sided tape weft roll, or single-sided strips for tape weft

Step 1: Prep The Hair

Start with clean, dry hair to help the extensions bond properly and blend in naturally. Use a shampoo that’s safe for extensions and skip the conditioner (it can make your hair too slippery for the tape to stick!). After washing, make sure the hair is completely dry. Even a little bit of moisture can affect how well the tape holds.

Step 2: Section The Hair

Begin at the bottom of the head, right at the nape, and work your way up. Use the sectioning ring to create clean, horizontal sections and clip the top sections out of the way. Make your first part just above the ears. The cleaner the line, the better the tape will stick, so using a sectioning ring can really help you get those neat, even partings.

Step 3: Apply the Tape Weft

Section out a small layer of the natural hair. Place the weft tape hair extensions underneath this layer with the tape side facing up, about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the scalp. Create another part just above that weft and take another thin slice of hair and place it onto the exposed adhesive of the weft.

Step 4: Apply Single-Sided Tape

Place either a weft’s length of single-sided tape from a single-sided tape roll or single-sided tape strips face down onto the adhesive side of the tape weft, so that the natural hair is sandwiched in between the two sets of adhesive tape. Press firmly for a few seconds to make sure everything holds.

Step 5: Work Your Way Up

Repeat the same steps as you move up the head section by section. Leave a little space between each row so the hair can move naturally and comfortably. Try not to place the wefts too close to the scalp or hairline. This helps them blend in properly and avoid bulkiness.

Step 6: Final Check and Style

Once all the tape weft extensions are in, gently tug on each one to make sure they’re secure. Check that everything lies flat and stays hidden under the natural hair. Now, you’re ready to style however you like, whether that’s smooth and straight, loose waves, or bouncy volume!
