Dos and Don'ts for Tape In Extensions

Big Kizzy® Pro Hold™ Double Sided Hair Extension Replacement Tape Tab Being Applied to Extension

If you’re wondering, how long do tape in extensions last? This all depends on whether they were applied the right way and how they’re maintained. If you want to know what to do and what not to do regarding your tape in extensions, our hair pros at Big Kizzy have you covered!

Here are our expert tips for tape in extensions dos and don'ts:

Do use double-sided tape for standard applications

When applying tape in extensions, using double-sided tape is recommended for anyone with a normal hair type. Use regular hold, double-sided tape for standard applications, or extra hold for thicker hair.

Don’t use double-sided tape for very thin or fine hair types

If you have damaged, delicate, very thin, or fine hair, it’s best to use single-sided tape over double-sided tape. This is so that you can use half the number of wefts on your hair, which means half the weight on your strands.

Do section out the right amount of hair for tape in sandwiches

For best results, try to keep the amount of hair between each weft tape as even as possible. The perfect amount allows you to make a secure seal with double-sided tape.

Don’t section out too little or too much hair for tape in sandwiches

If you use too little hair between the wefts, you’ll have tape in hair extensions that slip and slide. If you use too much hair between the wefts, you won’t be able to seal the tape for proper adhesion.

Do place your hair extensions ¼ and ½ inch from your scalp

Tape in placement matters! The sweet spot for placing tape in extensions is between ¼ to ½ inch from your scalp. This way, your hair will sit flat on your head and have a comfortable fit.

Don’t place your hair extensions too close to your scalp

If you place your extensions right at your root without giving any space, you’ll have unnatural and uncomfortable tape in hair extensions. Applying it too close to the scalp creates tension at the roots and prevents them from falling naturally—these are both common placement issues!

Do shampoo at your roots and condition from mid-lengths down

Wait at least 48 hours after application to get your hair wet. After that time frame, you’re free to wash your hair, but try to keep it between one and three times per week. Shampoo your roots and condition them from mid-length down, being sure to avoid getting conditioner on attachment points.

Don’t over wash your hair or use oil-based products near the roots

Washing your hair more than three times per week can lead to dried-out and damaged tape in extensions. If you’re using any oil-based products in your hair, always ensure you keep the oil away from attachment points. Oil can loosen the adhesive glue, which can lead to tape in hair extensions slipping out of your hair.

Do limit heat styling and wait until hair is 80% dry before using heat tools

Try to limit how often you heat style your hair, as it can cause irreversible damage to your extensions over time. When you do heat style, always use the lowest heat setting, use a heat protectant spray, and wait until your hair is about 80% dry.

Don’t heat style directly on the tape tabs or use heat tools on wet hair

Avoid the tape tabs on the attachment points when using heating tools, especially curling wands or flat irons. This can melt the adhesive and compromise the bond, leading to extensions falling out. Never use heat tools on wet hair, as that’s when hair is most fragile and prone to damage.
