You might be wondering, “How do I remove hair extensions?” It’s recommended that you book a salon appointment to have them removed professionally. However, if you can’t get to a salon and need to take them out on your own, no worries, we’ll walk you through it. More specifically, we’ll get into how to remove hair extensions with pliers just like the pros do. Keep reading for all the details!

Which Hair Extension Pliers Do I Need?

Now that you’re ready to remove your hair extensions, you’ll need to grab some tools to make it easier for you! These professional tools will also help you remove the extensions correctly to avoid damaging your strands. For this blog, we’re going to focus on weft hair extensions, particularly beaded weft extensions (aka NBR, IBE, hidden beaded row, invisible beaded row, or micro-link.)

Here are the hair extension pliers stylists swear by:

Claw Pliers for Weft Extensions

Claw Pliers

These claw pliers for weft extensions are designed to fit into hair extension beads. Use these premium claw pliers to loosen and open beads when removing hair extensions. They’re comfortable to use with an ergonomic handle and non-slip grip. If you want a seamless removal without damage, these are a must!

You can use these pointed-tip hair extension pliers for both the removal and application of weft extensions. Like the claw pliers, they’re crafted with a non-slip grip and ergonomic handle for a comfortable feel. These pliers work well for evenly closing hair extension beads as well as removing them.

How Do I Remove Hair Extensions

Stylist Using Removal Tool

Now that you’ve got your hair extension pliers, it’s time to remove your hair extensions! If you’re removing them yourself at home, you’ll want to follow these directions carefully. It’s easy to be too rough on your hair accidentally, so take care to be as gentle as possible when you remove hair extension beads.

Follow these tips to remove your beaded weft extensions:

  1. Pull up your natural hair and use duck bill hair clips to hold the hair out of the way.
  2. Work in sections across and up your head, starting at the hairline.
  3. Using claw pliers, gently apply pressure to the two opposite edges of the bead.
  4. This should loosen it enough so you can slide the bead down the hair and remove the weft.
  5. Be very careful not to put too much pressure on the bead; otherwise, it could tighten (the opposite effect of what we’re going for here!).
  6. If you’re having trouble getting the beads to loosen, you can also use the pointed-tip extension pliers to grip the bead.
  7. Apply pressure around all of the edges of the bead so that it breaks and you can easily remove it.

If you don’t feel confident that you can remove your own extensions, you should go ahead and book an appointment with a stylist. Find a hair extension stylist near you for removal who has experience with your type of hair extensions. When in doubt, stick with a professional removal for best results!
