What Are Sew In Extensions?

If you’re brand new to this method of extension, start here! Sew in weft extensions are sewn into the natural hair onto small braids created along the scalp. You may also see this method called weave in hair extensions or sew in beaded weft extensions (if beads are incorporated as well). These extensions are very secure and can last for several weeks to a few months before removal and reapplication.

The wefts you use for weft sew in extensions can be either machine-made or hand-tied. If you’re working with thick or coarse hair, machine wefts will be suitable for this hair type. If you’re working with normal to fine hair, stick with hand-tied wefts, as those will be lighter and more flexible in the hair. Now let’s get into the details of threading the special c-curved needles for sew ins!

How to Thread a C-Curved Needle

For those of you who are brand new to
sew in weft extensions, you might not know what c-curved needles are when learning how to sew in weft hair extensions. These needles differ from regular threading needles in that they’re curved into a c-shape specifically made for sew in weft application.

Now grab your needle and thread, here’s how to get started:

  • Measure out the required amount of nylon weft thread needed from the spool
  • Hold the needle with the curve facing upwards so that the eye of the needle is easily visible (good lighting is key here!)
  • Carefully line up the nylon thread with the eye of the needle and push through the hole
  • Pull the thread through and find the other side of the thread
  • Create a double knot to secure the thread to the needle

Curious how much nylon thread you’ll need? Measure the length of the row for your section—the thread length needs to be 3-5 times that length. Calculate this by multiplying the amount of thread used in one inch by the total length of the seam in inches. Our nylon hair extension threadcomes in 250m or 1400m sizes, so you can choose the right amount that you’ll need.
