Beads for Hair Extensions: How to Determine the Right Amount

Beads for Hair Extensions: How to Determine the Right Amount

Beaded weft extensions are a popular option for those who want to add length and volume to their natural hair. These hair extensions using beads don’t require any glue, heat, or chemicals for application, which is a huge plus for this hair extension method! Instead, wefts are attached using small hair extension beads that are looped through the natural strands.

If you’re getting ready to apply extensions with beads, you likely have a few questions, especially if this is your first time. We’ll go over the different types of beads for extensions, help you determine how many beads for hair extensions you’ll need, and walk you through the application process. This way, you know exactly how many beads to order along with any other tools you might need—Big Kizzy has you covered!

What Are the Different Types of Hair Extension Beads

Before we get into the number of beads for hair extensions you need, let’s go over the different types of beads. As you look for beads for extensions, you’ll notice two main options: silicone-lined and copper-lined. Each one has its unique features and purpose, so you can decide which is best for your needs.

Here’s what you need to know about both:

Silicone-Lined Beads

Silicone-lined hair beadsare made of lightweight aluminum with a soft silicone layer inside. This is the most popular choice for many as it’s suitable for all hair types. The silicone is gentle on the hair while providing a secure grip to prevent any slippage. They’re also durable and reduce friction on the strands.

Copper-Lined Beads

Copper-lined hair beads are made out of aluminum as well but are lined with copper instead of silicone. You’ll most likely see these in the form of flare beads, which are longer than other bead types. These are best for anyone with fine or thin hair, as they don’t hold as tightly. For any other hair type, silicone beads are the go-to choice

How Many Beads for Extensions Do You Need?

When it comes to determining how many beads for hair extensions you’ll need, there are a few factors to consider. The amount of beads you’ll need depends on the shape of the head, the number of wefts, the number of rows used, and the hair type. All of these components can vary and should be determined in a consultation with the hair extension client.

Use this quick reference list to determine how many hair extension beads you’ll need:

  • 50 beads: for a quarter head
  • 100 beads: for a half head
  • 150 beads: for a three-quarter head, ideal for medium to thick hair for length and volume
  • 200 beads: for a full head, ideal for fine or thin hair for extra volume

Our silicone-lined extension beads come in either 250 or 1,000 count in six different colors (light blonde, blonde, light brown, brown, black, and burgundy).  Each extension application will be unique to the person, so having enough beads is essential and always better than not having enough!

How To Apply Hair Extensions Using Beads

Once you’ve ordered the right amount of hair extension beads you need, the next step is reviewing how to properly use them for application. Ensuring you follow each step carefully will give you the best possible results without damaging the hair. Besides having your beads on hand, you’ll also need a loop tool, extension pliers, and hair clips (find all the weft extension tools you need here!).

Here’s how to apply hair extensions using beads

  1. Part the hair horizontally and use hair clips to keep the upper layer of hair out of the way.
  2. Load the silicone beads onto the loop tool and run a small lock of hair through it.
  3. Move the bead up the loop tool to the root of the hair and hold it in place.
  4. Pull the loop tool away from the head, bringing the hair through the bead.
  5. Use the extension pliers to clamp the bead to keep it in place close to the scalp.
  6. Repeat this process along the entire horizontal section and again if using multiple rows.
  7. Release the top layer of hair that was clipped up and brush to blend the hair.

And there you have it! For best results, remove and reapply beaded weft extensions every 6 to 8 weeks.
