How Long Do Extensions Last In Your Hair

Big Kizzy weft application

For those of you wondering, “How long do weft extensions last?” We can look at it two ways: how long do extensions last in your hair before they need to be removed and reapplied, and how long they last before you have to replace them. Starting with the latter, if your extensions use 100% Remy Human hair, you can expect that hair to last the longest, up to a year, with proper care (using our tips we’ll cover later!).

Which Extensions Last the Longest Based on Weft Method?

There are many different ways to apply weft extensions, such as beaded wefts, sew-in, tape weft, and weft extension hybrid methods. We’ve created a quick breakdown of these methods and how long you can expect each to last before you need to remove and reapply it.

The general timelines are:

  • Beaded weft extensions: every 6 to 8+ weeks

  • Sew in weft extensions: every 6 to 8+ weeks

  • Tape in weft extensions: every 4 to 6+ weeks (sometimes can last up to 8+ weeks)

  • Hybrid weft extensions: every 6 to 8+ weeks (depending on the combo)

How to Keep Your Weft Extension Hair Long-Lasting

With the right care, your weft extensions will stay soft and full for far longer than you might think. It’s all about sticking to a maintenance and hair care routine. Our expert tips will help you get the most out of your extensions while also keeping your natural hair healthy and protected.

Brush Gently and Regularly

Brushing your extensions properly is one of the most important steps in maintaining your wefts. This prevents tangles, reduces shedding, and gives your hair that smooth and polished look. Always use a soft-bristle or loop brush, then start at the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling. Brush at least twice daily (especially before bed and washing!).

Wash Only When Necessary

Over-washing can strip the hair and lead to dryness or tangling, so let’s prevent that! Wash your hair 1 to 2 times a week, or as needed, with extension-safe shampoo and conditioner. When washing, only apply conditioner on the mid-lengths to ends to keep your tresses moisturized.

Minimize Heat Styling

Excess heat can dry out and weaken your extensions, shortening their lifespan. With the proper precautions, you can still heat style while keeping your wefts healthy. Limit heat exposure by letting your hair air dry when possible and using the lowest heat setting when styling. Always use a heat protectant before using hot tools (our Thairapy™ Hair Repair Oil also acts as a heat protectant!).

Protect Your Hair While Sleeping

Sleeping with loose extensions can cause friction, often leading to tangling or breakage overnight. A simple bedtime routine goes a long way, such as braiding your hair or putting it in a loose ponytail. You can also try a silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet to keep your extensions protected.

Keep Your Hair Hydrated

Since extensions don’t produce oil like natural hair, you’ll need to condition them regularly so they don’t become brittle and damaged. You can do this with conditioner, leave-in conditioner, or hair oil for shiny and healthy locks. Apply to mid-lengths and ends (not the roots or attachment points).

Use a Converter Kit for More Flexibility

Converting your extensions to clip ins can help extend their life overall. Our Kizzy Clips Hair Extension Kit allows you to easily turn your extensions into DIY clip in extensions (no sewing required!). This helps reduce wear and tear from daily use and allows you to remove them before sleeping, showering, or exercising.
