7 Reasons Tape In Extensions Aren’t Lasting and How to Fix Them

If you’re wearing tape in extensions, you already know that stunning length and volume have never been easier. Just tape them in yourself (or get them applied by a professional stylist) and enjoy weeks of gorgeous hair! But what happens when your extensions don’t last as long as they should?

The thing is, extensions won’t fail you for no reason at all. Something is causing them to slip or fall out before your next appointment. Our hair extension pros at Big Kizzy know all about tape in extensions and how long they last. Up next, we’ll break down the top reasons why your tape-ins aren’t lasting and how to fix them!

How Long Do Tape In Extensions Last? And Why Yours Are Falling Short

Before we get into the reasons why your extensions are having issues, let’s answer the question:

How long does tape in last? Your tape in extensions should last between 6 and 8+ weeks before you have to remove and reapply them. If you’re having trouble getting them to last that long, we’ve got your answers!

Here are the top reasons your tape in extensions aren’t lasting (and how to fix them!):

Oily or Dirty Hair Before Application

One reason your extensions might not last as long as they should is if you apply them without washing your hair first. Any leftover oil, sweat, product buildup, or dirt can stop the tape from sticking properly. Before applying your extensions, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo (but skip the conditioner!).

Poor Quality Tape or Extensions

Another reason your tape in extensions might not be lasting? Using low-quality hair extensions and tape. If you’re trying to go for the least expensive options, you might end up spending more in the long run. Unfortunately, the saying “you get what you pay for” is true for extensions and adhesives. Invest in one of the best quality tape-in extensions brands and use salon-quality tape (like ours at Big Kizzy!).

Incorrect Application Technique

If your extensions weren’t properly applied, don’t expect them to last. Whether the tape is placed too close to the scalp, too far down, or with the wrong amount of hair between wefts, this can lead to extension slippage. When applying your extensions, proper placement is everything! Ensure all tape is applied correctly and evenly so it lasts as long as possible.

Using Oil or Alcohol Based Hair Care Products

If you’re using oil or alcohol-based hair products, it’s time to rethink that! These ingredients can break down the adhesive on your tape ins (hence why tape in extensions remover products are made with oil or alcohol!). To keep your extensions secure, stick to extension-safe hair care free from these ingredients.

Washing Your Hair Right After the Application

Have you just had your tape-in extensions applied? Hopefully, you didn’t wash your hair right away. If so, that might be your problem! Tape adhesive needs between 24 and 48 hours to fully bond. To be on the safe side, wait a full 48 hours before washing your hair with tape in extensions.

Heat Styling Too Close to Tape Attachment Points

Step away from the hot tools, we repeat, step away from the hot tools! Yes, you can use heat styling with tape in extensions generally, but it comes with a warning: high heat can melt the adhesive and loosen bonds. To prevent tape in extensions damage, set your tools to the lowest heat setting and stay a few inches away from the tape tabs. Our Thairapy™ Hair Oil is great for nourishing your strands and protecting them from heat styling.

Heavy Sweating or Frequent Swimming

Do you live an active lifestyle or spend a lot of time in the water? If you frequent the beach, pool, or gym, keep in mind that sweat, salt water, and chlorine can all weaken your tape in adhesive. Wear a protective hairstyle or swim cap before jumping in the water. Braid or wear your hair up before working out. Always rinse and wash your hair (try our FATT Shampoo and Conditioner, safe for extensions!) as soon as possible after getting it wet or excessively sweaty.
