Wondering what the difference is between all the tape options? It may seem like a small detail, but each type of tape has its own unique qualities and works better with specific extensions. You want to make sure you use the right tape so they stay secure and are applied properly. Trust us, understanding your options before you commit will save you a lot of trial and error.

First, let’s go over the two main types of extensions with tape:

Tape In Extensions

As one of the most widely used extensions, tape in extensions come in individual pre-taped hair wefts that are about 1 to 2 inches wide. It typically takes around 30 to 40 pieces to cover a full head of hair. They can be removed and reapplied with new extension tape tabs, making them a great option for clients who want a low-maintenance method.

Tape Weft Extensions

Tape weft extensions are similar to tape ins in that they also use a tape adhesive, but they come in longer wefts. They give clients the fullness of weft extensions with the convenience of the tape in application method. Instead of extension tape tabs, tape wefts are applied using either a tape roll or pre-cut strips.

Now that you know the difference, here’s a breakdown of the three tape styles and when to use each one:

  • Tape Tabs: Used for tape in extensions. Tape tabs are compatible with all the best tape in extension brands and are available in single or double-sided.

  • Tape Rolls: Used for tape weft extensions. Tape rolls come in single or double-sided and can be cut to the exact size of your tape weft, making them fully customizable.

  • Tape Strips: Also used for tape weft extensions. Strips are essentially the same as rolls but come pre-cut in 6-inch strips, saving you a step during the application process.

Now that you know which tape to use for each tape extension type, let’s get into how to apply each one.

  1. Measure and cut the tape from the roll, then attach the strip to the top of the extension weft.

  1. Create a horizontal part at the back of your head, right above your ears

  1. Place the first row of the weft tape in extensions along the part about ¼ to ½ inch away from the scalp.

  1. Using the sectioning ring, create another part right above the row you just applied. Then, section off a thin layer of hair that will be sandwiched between the wefts.

  1. Add the second tape in weft on top of the other weft to complete the tape in weft sandwich.

Extension Strips

  1. Place the tape weft beneath the sectioned layer with the tape side facing up, about ¼ to ½ inch from the scalp.

  1. Create another part just above the weft, then take a thin slice of hair and place it onto the exposed adhesive.

  1. Place a weft’s length of single-sided tape strips face down onto the adhesive side of the tape weft so that the natural hair is sandwiched between the two sets of adhesive tape.

  1. Press firmly for a few seconds to make sure everything holds.
