Are you a fan of weft hair extensions? We love them too at Big Kizzy! There are endless possibilities of styles, colors, and combinations to get that perfect look you’ve been waiting for. With a range of weft application methods, find what works best for you (or your client if you’re a stylist.)
One of the most common questions about weft extensions that those of us in the hair industry hear is how to make extensions last as long as possible. And if you’re about to invest in extensions, you likely have the same question! The answer is part weft extension installation and part weft hair extensions maintenance. A combination of both a professional application and a proper care routine gives you longer-lasting locks.
Now, let’s get into everything you need to know to extend the life of weft hair extensions!
Top Weft Extension Installation Tools for Long-Lasting Strands
First, longevity is all about getting those extensions applied by a professional stylist. They’ll know the proper technique for weft extension installation, whether that’s for sew-in, beaded weft, or any other method in between. If you get your extensions applied by an inexperienced person (or try to DIY), there’s a higher chance your extensions won’t last as long due to errors in the application. On top of that, it can also cause damage to your strands if not done correctly—no one wants to deal with that!
With all of that being said, if you’re reading this and you’re a stylist, it’s so important to have the right tools for your next application for weft hair extensions. This way, your client will be able to have extensions that are long-lasting (provided they also follow your care routine tips—more on that in the next section!).

Weft Hair Extensions Maintenance Tips To Extend Wear Time
Whether you’ve just had your extensions applied or want to give your client some maintenance tips, hair care is a crucial part of the process. Without proper care, the extensions won’t last as long as they could, and replacing them more often could be much more costly. For long-lasting weft hair extensions, having the right hair care routine will make a world of difference!
Follow these tips on how to take care of weft extensions:
- Avoid overwashing your extensions (aka daily) and wash 2 to 3 times per week max
- Use dry shampoo for in-between wash days to help limit how often you wash them
- Deep condition your hair extensions every other time you wash them
- Make sure to avoid the beaded weft attachment points when washing the hair extensions
- Carefully raise your hair at each row and gently rinse each attachment area to get any residue out
- Use a towel to pat dry your hair and then let it air dry or blow dry on the lowest setting
- Never go to sleep with wet extensions; ensure they’re fully dry before bed
- Limit how often you heat style your hair and use a heat-protectant spray
- Use hair care products formulated to be safe and gentle for use on hair extensions
- Stay away from hair care products with harsh ingredients such as parabens or sulfates
- Brush your hair extensions 2-3 times a day to get rid of tangles and prevent matting (and before washing or sleeping)
- Put your hair in a loose braid or bun before sleeping (use a silk pillowcase for less friction)
- When swimming with extensions, try not to get your hair wet with chlorine or saltwater
