If you’re not sure how to apply weft extensions or how much hair extension thread you’ll need, keep reading! Our hair extension pros at Big Kizzy will answer all of your questions about sew-in weft extension application. Here’s what you need to know!

What Is Hair Extension Thread Made Of?

Blonde thread

Extension thread can be made with either cotton or nylon thread. We recommend using durable nylon thread, as cotton thread can break more easily. It’s also less likely to tangle, more resistant, and lightweight (which is why we carry only nylon thread!).

Our nylon thread for sew-in extensions comes in five shades: light blonde, blonde, brown, black, and burgundy. Find the best shade to blend flawlessly into the natural hair when applying it. With a non-slip stitch, our extension thread is compatible with hand-tied weft, machine weft, and hybrid weft extensions.

How Much Thread Do You Need for Sew-In Weft Application?

Model Holding Blonde and Brown Thread

As you get ready for the sew-in weft application, you’ll need enough extension thread roughly 3-5 times the length of your row section. You can determine this by multiplying the amount of thread used in one inch by the total length of the seam in inches. Our nylon hair extension thread comes in 250m or 1400m sizes, so you can decide which amount best suits your needs.

You’ll also want to determine the number of wefts you’ll be using and how many rows. This will depend on the thickness of the natural hair. Thin hair types should use a single row with 3 to 4 wefts. Medium-thickness hair types work best with double rows using 6-8 wefts. And for thicker hair, 3 to 4 rows with 10 to 12 or more wefts are recommended.

How To Apply Weft Extensions Using Thread

Applying Weft Extensions on Model

Once you stock up on your extension thread and calculate how much you’ll need, it’s time to start the application process. Gather your supplies needed along with the thread, such as your weaving needles, small weft scissors, and a magnetic wristband to hold your needles. For best results, wash and condition your hair (or your client’s hair) before applying the extensions.

Here’s how to apply weft extensions

  • Create a part for the extensions that goes straight across the back of the head.
  • Start at one side of the head, create a braid along the part (also referred to as a cornrow), and secure the end with a hair elastic.
  • Thread your weaving needle with the nylon thread and tie a knot at the end.
  • Take your weft and place it against the braid along the scalp.
  • Insert the needle under and through to bring the thread into the weft and start sewing.
  • Continue sewing along the row, making tight stitches to secure the weft (ensure they’re tight enough to hold the weft in place but not too tight that it causes damage or discomfort!).
  • Make sure each stitch goes through both the weft and the braid with the natural hair.
  • Once you get to the end of the weft, tie a knot with the thread and cut off the excess thread with small weft scissors.
  • If you have multiple rows, repeat the same process for the remaining rows and wefts.

Keep in mind that sew-in weft extensions should be removed and reapplied every 6 to 8 weeks (depending on how fast the natural hair grows!). Leaving them in too long can damage the extensions and natural hair, so aim for this general timeframe.

Everything You Need For Weft Extension Installation And Removal

Whether you’re a stylist or have a passion for extensions and prefer to DIY them, having enough extension thread on hand is important.
