Here’s what you need to know all about tape wefts:
They’re a Non-Damaging Option
Tape wefts spread out the tension, so they’re much gentler on your client’s natural hair. There’s also no heat involved in the application. This makes them a perfect choice for anyone nervous about breakage or trying extensions for the first time.
Application Requires Clean Hair
If there’s any oil, conditioner, or product left on the hair, the tapes won’t stick the way they should. A good clarifying wash beforehand makes all the difference in how long the extensions last (we recommend F.A.T.T. Shampoo, that’s extension safe!).
Choose a High-Quality Tape for Application
The better the tape, the better the hold and the easier the removal (it really is that simple!). Investing in high-quality, professional hair tape saves you time and gives your clients a smoother experience. We offer salon-ready tape rolls and strips you can count on, including single-sided tape rolls, single-sided tape strips, and double-sided tape rolls. Use single-sided tape for application or reapplication, and use double-sided tape when replacing adhesive on the tape weft for reapplication.
Don’t Use Heated Tools to Seal
Tape wefts are designed to stick with pressure, not heat, so there’s no reason to pull out a flat iron. Heat can actually weaken the adhesive, causing the tapes to fall out sooner. Instead, use an applicator tool to safely and securely seal each tape weft sandwich.
The Average Wear Time is 4 to 6 Weeks
Most clients will get a good 4-6 weeks of wear time before needing a move-up. If they have an oily scalp or an active lifestyle, they may need to come in a little sooner. Sometimes this can be pushed to 8 weeks with proper care, but no longer than that is recommended.
Remove All Adhesive Residue Before Retaping
Putting new tape over old residue is a guaranteed recipe for slipping. Taking the time to clean off every bit of adhesive gives you a much stronger and cleaner reinstallation. Always have hair extension tape on hand for those applications and retaping (stock up on both double-sided and single-sided tape!).
Proper Extension Placement is Essential
You want to ensure that each tape weft sandwich is placed between 1/4 and 1/2 inch from the scalp. This allows the weft to lie flat on the client’s hair and blend without bulkiness. It is also more comfortable for the client to put less strain on the roots.
Use Them for Clients That Want More Volume
You don’t need a full install to make a big impact, as even a few tape weft rows can boost fullness beautifully. It’s a great option for clients who just want more volume instead of dramatic length. Especially for those who are used to regular tape ins that want extra thickness that tape weft provides.
Clients Can Reuse Their Extensions Several Times
With proper removal and cleaning, high-quality tape wefts can be reused 2 to 3 times or more. It’s a win for your clients’ budgets and a win for you when it comes to providing long-term value. Just make sure to stress to your clients the importance of having a maintenance routine at home for their extensions (and sticking to it!). You’ll need double-sided tape rolls for the replacement tape and single-sided tape rolls or strips to seal the extensions for reapplication.
