When it comes to hair extensions, there are many different application methods. The options range from temporary extensions like clip in or band style to semi-permanent styles like tape in, sew in, beaded weft, or keratin bond. Each type of hair extension style is unique in how it’s applied and removed, which means it requires specialized tools.
For those of you curious about sewing hair extensions, this method uses a needle and thread to apply the wefts to the natural hair. If you’re a stylist who wants to start sewing in hair extensions as a new service for your clients, there’s one important detail to pay attention to: the weaving needle. You shouldn’t use just any needle—you’ll need a specific hair extension sewing needle designed for applying sew in weft extensions. Not sure what that is? Our extension pros at Big Kizzy will cover all the details ahead!
What Type of Needle Do You Need for Sewing In Hair Extensions?

The type of needle you use for sew in extensions matters! Go for a C-curve weaving needle—trust us, this will make your life much easier with more efficient applications. This hair extension sewing needle is different than a regular threading needle because it’s curved into a C-shape, specifically designed for sew in weft application.

Our Professional C Curve Needles come with five needles per pack and is shaped like a “C” for attaching weft extensions using nylon thread.
How To Use A C-Curve Weaving Needle for Sewing Hair Extensions
Now that you know what type of needle for hair extensions you need and why it matters, let’s go into how to use it! Reach for these needles for sew in weft applications (and some beaded weft extension applications). Our hair extension experts have worked with many stylists over the years, so we’ve put together the ultimate step-by-step instructions below for using your C-curve needles to apply extensions.
Step 1: Thread the C-Curve Needle
-
Carefully measure the required amount of nylon weft thread you need from the spool.
-
Hold the needle with the curve pointing up, making it easier to see the eye of the needle (good lighting is key here!)
-
Gently line up the nylon thread with the needle’s eye and guide it through the hole.
-
Pull the thread through and find the other end of the thread.
-
Create a double knot to securely attach the thread to the needle.
Step 2: Create a Braided Row for the Weave
-
Use a rattail comb to create a part that goes straight across the back of the head.
-
Start at one side of the head and braid along the part (creating a cornrow braid).
-
Once you reach the end of the part, secure the end of the braid with a hair elastic.
Step 3: Sew in the Weft Extensions
-
Take your hair extension weft and place it against the braid along the scalp.
-
Insert the needle under and through to bring the thread into the weft and start sewing.
-
Continue sewing along the row, making tight stitches to secure the weft (ensure they’re tight enough to hold the weft in place but not too tight that it causes damage or discomfort!).
-
Make sure each stitch goes through both the weft and the braid with the natural hair.
-
Once you get to the end of the weft, tie a knot with the thread and cut off the excess thread with small weft scissors.
-
If you have multiple rows, repeat the same process for the remaining rows and wefts.
