How to Apply Oil to Hair Extensions for Best Results

If you have hair extensions, then you know how easily they can dry out and lose their luster. But do you know the best way to revive them? Hair oil is the ultimate fix as it restores moisture and helps prevent tangling.

For those of you who are new to hair oil, we’ve got you! Not only do we have Thairapy™ Hair Repair Oil, the best hair oil to use, but we’ll also explain how to apply oil to hair extensions to get flawless results. Everything you need to know for gorgeous strands is ahead!

How To Use Hair Oil on Your Hair Extensions

Adding hair oil to your extensions is a pro move to extend their lifespan and give them the moisture they need to look their best. Unlike your actual hair, extensions don’t get that natural oil from your scalp, so it’s important to give them an extra boost of nourishment and hydration with a moisturizing hair oil (like our Thairapy™ Hair Oil, which is safe for use on extensions and color-treated hair!).

Keep your hair extensions long-lasting and healthy with these steps on how to apply oil to hair extensions:

Step 1: Create Your Custom Conditioning Blend

Start by choosing a conditioner (try our F.A.T.T. Thickening Conditioner for extra softness and hydration!) to use with Thairapy™Hair Oil. To avoid buildup on extensions, ensure you’re using the right amount of hair oil based on your hair type. This formula is concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Put a dollop of conditioner in your hand and add the drops of hair oil, depending on hair type and texture:

  • Fine Hair: 1 to 2 drops

  • Medium Hair: 2 to 3 drops

  • Coarse Hair: 3 to 5 drops

  • Damaged Hair: 6 to 8 drops

Step 2: Apply to Your Hair Avoiding Attachment Points

Gently apply the conditioner and hair oil treatment through the mid-lengths to ends of your hair extensions. These are the areas that tend to experience the most damage, dryness, and wear.

IMPORTANT: Avoid applying directly to the roots or attachment points. This can cause slippage or buildup, which can loosen the bonds and shorten the life of your extensions.

Step 3: Allow the Mixture to Work Its Magic

Let the hair oil and conditioner mixture sit on your extensions for about 5 to 10 minutes to deeply hydrate and nourish your strands.

For extensions that feel super dry or brittle, you can leave the treatment in for up to 30 minutes for deep conditioning, which will give your tresses the extra boost of moisture they need.

Step 4: Rinse All Product Out Gently and Style

After giving your hair extensions enough time to reap all the nourishing benefits, rinse them with cold to lukewarm water so that all remaining product is removed.

Carefully comb your fingers through your extensions to prevent tangling and ensure they’re properly rinsed without any residue left behind.

After rinsing, pat your extensions dry (never rub them!) and let them air dry whenever possible. If you need to dry them quickly, you can use low heat if blow drying, but try to heat style sparingly. Our hair oil also helps protect your strands from heated tools. You can also use it on your dry hair to keep it hydrated and healthy!

Your extensions will feel softer and be much more manageable after using Thairapy™ Hair Oil!

How Often Should You Oil Your Hair Extensions?

Using hair oil regularly can help extend the life of your extensions and keep them shiny and tangle-free. How often you use the oil on your extensions is all about balance. Now that you know how to use hair oil, you don’t want to overdo it or not use it enough.

So, how often should you oil your hair extensions? Use this quick reference based on your hair needs:

  • For Daily Wear: Use daily, based on your hair type, to maintain moisture without weighing down the hair. Since it’s concentrated, start small and build up!

  • For Heat Styling:  Apply a small amount before using hot tools to protect your extensions from dryness and breakage. Our hair oil doubles as a natural thermal protectant!

  • For Dry or Damaged Extensions: Use a couple of times per week, especially if your extensions feel rough or brittle.

  • For Fresh Sets or New Applications: Wait at least 48 hours before applying any hair oil to your extensions to allow the bond or tape to fully set.
